  Fully define the process window to match the material being processed, select the appropriate candidate laser sources, and define the process specifics, such as: allowable variations in the material properties, beam quality, power, QC requirements, etc.

• Laser Hardware

  It is important to consider often widely variable aspects, such as short and long term power variability, beam stability, service requirements, and operating costs since even lasers of the same general design from different manufacturers are not created equal.

• Beam Transmission

  Determine how the energy generated by the laser should be delivered; transmissive, fiber, or a combination. Modify the beam characteristics from the source or shape it at the work piece. Specify laser beam diagnostics appropriate for process control.

• Motion Systems

  Determine which basic motion type is appropriate, such as xy, flying optics, galvo, etc, and its accuracy capabilities, speed, acceleration, and difficulty of programming.
